Storm Response Update

Following the severe winds and rainfall across the region, the Town of Essex is continuing to respond to storm-related reports as the community begins the cleanup and recovery process. Residents are encouraged to take precautions, report issues on Town property and help ensure storm debris is properly managed.

Report Storm-Related Damage

If you see downed branches, damaged infrastructure or other issues on Town property, please submit a service request to the Town.

When reporting an issue, please provide the location and as much detail as possible to help Town staff respond efficiently.

Power Outages and Downed Lines

Residents who are still experiencing a power outage should contact their electricity provider directly.

E.L.K. Energy clients: Report an outage by calling 519-776-5291 or 1-877-355-7798, or through the E.L.K. Energy website.

Hydro One clients: Report an outage online through Hydro One or by calling 1-800-434-1235.

For your safety, never approach a downed power line or wire. Stay at least 10 metres away and keep others away from the area. Never assume a downed wire is safe.

If there is an immediate danger, call 911.

Flooding and Sewer Backups

While the storm has ended, residents are encouraged to remain alert to potential flooding and drainage issues following the significant rainfall.

All Town pumps are operating correctly, and Town staff continue to monitor conditions and respond as needed.

Residents can help prevent or reduce flooding around their homes by:

  • Clearing leaves and debris from eavestroughs and downspouts.
  • Ensuring downspouts direct water away from the foundation.
  • Checking that sump pumps are operating properly and considering a backup power source.
  • Moving valuables and important items off basement floors if flooding is a concern.
  • Keeping nearby storm drains clear of leaves and debris where it is safe to do so.

If you are experiencing flooding or a sewer backup:

  • If it is safe, move valuables and furniture away from areas where water is entering.
  • Avoid entering a flooded basement if water may have reached electrical outlets, appliances or other electrical equipment.
  • Contact your utility provider if you suspect an electrical hazard.
  • If you are experiencing a sewer backup, limit your use of toilets, sinks, showers, washing machines and dishwashers.
  • Contact your insurance provider and document damage with photographs.
  • Report flooding or sewer backups to the Town at 519-776-7336.

Never enter floodwater if there is a downed power line nearby. Stay at least 10 metres away and call 911 if there is an immediate danger.

For curbside collection:

  • Tree limbs and branches must be cut into four-foot lengths.
  • Branches must have a maximum diameter of two feet.
  • Branches must be securely bundled.
  • Bundles should not exceed 45 pounds (20 kg).
  • Yard waste must be placed in acceptable containers, including paper yard waste bags, cardboard boxes or garbage cans.
  • Soil must be removed from tree roots.

Storm Debris Drop-Off Grace Period

The Essex Windsor Solid Waste Authority is offering a grace period for residents using double-axle trailers to drop off branches from the recent storm.

Residents dropping off yard waste and branches will not be charged a fee until September 30, 2026. Commercial customers will continue to be charged during this period.
