New to Essex

Welcome home!

Whether you've just moved to Essex Centre, Harrow, McGregor, or Colchester, we're here to help you get settled.

From setting up your utilities and learning your garbage collection schedule to registering your dog, finding recreation programs and signing up for emergency alerts, this guide brings together the information you'll need as a new resident.

Your Home

The Town of Essex issues two property tax notices each year, with four installment dates:

  • Interim Tax Notice: mailed in February
    • Payment due: last business day of February
    • Payment due: last business day of April
  • Final Tax Notice: mailed in July
    • Payment due: last business day of July
    • Payment due: last business day of October

The Town offers several convenient ways to pay your property taxes, including online and telephone banking, in person at Town Hall, pre-authorized payment options and e-billing.

If your mortgage company pays your property taxes on your behalf, your tax notice is still provided to you for your records. If you're unsure who is responsible for paying your taxes, contact your financial institution.

Learn more about tax payment options, e-billing, property assessments, and more on our Property Tax Page.

Water and wastewater billing is managed by the Town of Essex. As a new property owner, you'll need to make sure your water account is properly established. Water and wastewater accounts are billed monthly.

You can manage your account through myEssex, including viewing your account and making payments. The Town also offers pre-authorized payments and paperless billing.

If you're moving into a property, selling a property or need a final meter reading, make sure you submit the appropriate request to the Town.

Good to know: Paperless water/wastewater billing is available and provides a $1.25 discount per bill!

Learn more about payment options, pre-authorized payments, e-billing, and more on our Water/Wastewater webpage.
