Sanitary Sewer Assessments in Colchester

The Town of Essex is advising residents in the Colchester area that sanitary sewer assessments will take place from Monday, October 26 to Friday, October 30, 2026, as part of ongoing efforts to maintain and improve municipal infrastructure.

The Town has retained Rapid Assessment Technology Services Inc. (RATS) to conduct acoustic screening of sanitary sewer pipes in select areas of Colchester.

The assessment uses specialized equipment to transmit sound through sewer pipes to identify potential blockages or areas requiring further inspection or maintenance. This non-invasive technology allows the Town to assess sewer conditions efficiently, helping to prevent sewer backups and reduce unnecessary maintenance activities.

What Residents Can Expect

During the assessment period, residents may notice technicians accessing sanitary sewer manholes, including those located on private property within the project area.

Each assessment takes approximately five minutes and does not require excavation, flushing or heavy machinery. Residents may hear brief tones from the equipment while testing is underway.

No action is required from residents, and residents do not need to be home during the assessment. Technicians will provide identification upon request.

The Town appreciates residents' cooperation as this important infrastructure assessment is completed.
