Essex Fire and Rescue Services Introduces Sensory Support Kits
Essex Fire and Rescue Services has introduced Sensory Support Kits to help firefighters better support individuals who may experience sensory overload or face communication challenges during an emergency.
Each kit contains a range of practical tools designed to reduce stress, support communication and help create more positive interactions between first responders and members of the community.
The kit includes:
- Non-verbal communication boards
- Sensory and fidget tools
- Noise reducing earmuffs
- Visual supports
- Comfort items
- Firefighter-themed companion plush
The kits provide firefighters with practical resources to assist individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), sensory sensitivities and other communication or sensory processing needs. By incorporating these tools into emergency responses, Essex Fire and Rescue Services is taking another step toward creating safer, more inclusive interactions for everyone.
“Every emergency is different, and every person we serve has unique needs,” said Jim Meloche, Assistant Deputy Chief. “These Sensory Support Kits will help our Firefighters provide more inclusive and compassionate care while reducing stress for individuals with sensory sensitivities and their families.”
“These kits are another way we can ensure our emergency crew is responsive to the needs of everyone in our community,” said the Mayor of the Town of Essex. “Having these tools available gives our firefighters another way to communicate effectively and help people feel safe and supported when they need us most.”
The First Responder Sensory Kits were purchased from the Fire Marshal’s Public Fire Safety Council and were developed in partnership with Autism Canada. Sensory Support Kits are currently installed on all fire trucks in the Town of Essex.
