Development Services

The Building division assists developers, contractors and residents in obtaining permission to start construction on building projects. Prior to granting approval, the inspector reviews submitted plans for Ontario Building Code and municipal zoning compliance.

Services are provided in the following areas:

• Issuing building permits
• Issuing building-related permits, including demolition, sewage system, pool fence, driveway entrance and sign permits
• Enforcing zoning provisions

The Town of Essex Planning Department provides a broad range of policy planning and land development services. Through an open and inclusive public planning process, the department is committed to enhancing the livability of the unique communities that comprise the Town of Essex.

Services are provided in the following five areas:

• Official Plan and Zoning By-law Amendments, generally and on a site-specific basis.
• Minor Variance and Property Severance applications to the Committee of Adjustment.
• Plans of Subdivision and Condominium.
• Site Plan Approval.
• Land use policy changes to comply with new provincial legislation or to address such matters as changes in community demographics, land use needs and guidelines to sustainable community development.

The Economic Development Department supports Essex’s business community by fostering a strong, sustainable local economy. Working with Essex Town Council, the department focuses on business retention and growth, encourages entrepreneurship, and supports investment by providing businesses with access to resources, guidance, and efficient service. The goal is to create a positive economic environment where businesses can grow and succeed.
