Community Services

The Community Services Department provides a wide range of recreational programs and services to meet a variety of needs and promote healthy and active living for people of all ages and abilities.

Community Services is responsible for the delivery of services in the following areas:

Community and recreation programs

  • Programming of recreation, fitness and leisure activities
  • Programming of aquatics and lifesaving programs
  • Planning to meet the recreation needs of the community
  • Publishing of the Recreation and Municipal Information Guide

Facility services

  • Bookings of ball diamonds, soccer fields, ice pads, gymnasiums, community and meeting rooms, parks, pavilions and pools.
  • Facility maintenance of municipal buildings and properties
  • Managing business services for sports facilities
  • Facility rentals
  • Harbour and beach management

Parks and open spaces

  • Maintenance and care of existing parks, trails and open spaces
  • Development of new parks

Events and festivals

  • Working with community groups and organizations
  • Planning and staging of community events

Responsibilities of the Community Services Department

Community Services is responsible for the delivery of services in the following areas:

The Parks and Facilities Department is responsible for maintaining all properties owned by the Town of Essex. This includes office buildings, arenas, soccer fields, baseball diamonds, parks, playgrounds, trails, and splash pads.

Parks and Facilities is also responsible for operating and maintaining Colchester Harbour and the adjacent beach and playground.

The Recreation and Culture Department operates out of the Essex Recreation Complex, manages a number of community centres, and offers a wide variety of high-quality programs for participants of all ages and abilities.

Area residents are encouraged to participate in recreation, leisure, sports and community programs as part of a healthy, active lifestyle.

As a HIGH FIVE® accredited organization, the Town of Essex’s commitment to quality recreation standards ensures that children participating in our programs have positive experiences.

The Essex Fire Department’s Administration division looks after all aspects of the management of the department and its direction.

Essex Fire and Rescue provides services and programs in our community to protect lives, property and the environment. Firefighters respond to service calls for fires (structural and open air), fire alarm activations, carbon monoxide alarms, motor vehicle accidents, rescue, emergency medical intervention with Windsor/Essex EMS, and natural disasters.
