Summer Youth Employment

Annually, the Town of Essex hires students to summer positions in a number of departments. Each position is summarized below. Click the title of each for the full job description.

Summer Youth Job Descriptions

Finance & Legislative Services (2 positions)

This position will have functions in two departments—Finance and Business Services and Legislative Services.

In the Finance and Business Services Department, the successful applicant will assist with finance-related functions and preparing laserfiching finance-related documents. 

In the Legislative Services Department, the successful applicant will assist with cemetery recordkeeping, laserfiching by-laws, minutes and agendas and updating the animal licensing software.

Harbour Attendant (6 positions)

Harbour Attendant’s assist with the seasonal operations of the Colchester Harbour which include customer service related to the harbour and harbour users as well as adjacent grounds and beach area and will assist in providing a safe and enjoyable boating and marina experience to all users.

Lead Harbour Attendant (1 position)

The Lead Harbour Attendant will assist the Assistant Manager, Facilities and Marina with the day-to-day operations of the facility and perform the duties of a Harbour Attendant when required.

Heritage (1 position)

The successful applicant will research the Town’s records to gather historical details for properties of heritage interest, and will assist Planning staff with planning and development as it relates to heritage conservation in the Town of Essex and the administration of heritage programs.

Horticultural (2 positions)

The successful applicants will assist the Landscape Technician and the Communities in Bloom Committee with various outdoor initiatives.

Human Resources (1 position)

The successful applicant will assist the Manager, Human Resources in the administrative functions of the HR Office which may include various administrative projects in addition to day-to-day administrative tasks.

Parks & Recreation Administrative Intern (1 position)

The successful applicant will assist the Director of Community Services in the department’s administrative functions which will also include working with the Communities in Bloom Committee with various office initiatives.

Parks Maintenance (9 positions)

The successful applicants will be assisting with a wide variety of horticultural, turf maintenance and cleanup duties at various parks, playgrounds, sports fields and facilities.

Public Works (2 positions)

The successful applicants will assist with various duties in the Public Works department related to maintenance of roads and equipment and in the office as required.

Tourism Development Intern (1 position)

The successful applicant will assist in developing the Town’s presence as a tourist destination and will assist Communications and Economic Development staff with tourism and business development projects.
