Essex Town Council is the main governing and legislative body for the Town of Essex. It consists of the Mayor, Deputy Mayor, and six Councillors. Councillors are elected to one of four wards (two each in Wards 1 and 3, one each in Wards 2 and 4) and serve a four-year term of office. The Mayor and Deputy Mayor are elected at large.

Since 2013, Essex Town Council has included two Youth Council Members. The function of Youth Council Members is to attend, participate and/or report in regular meetings of Town Council for the purpose of bringing a youth perspective to Council matters or discussions.

The Code of Conduct for Members of Council and Local Boards/Committees outlines the principles of good conduct and ethics that Council Members are expected to demonstrate in the performance of their duties as elected officials.
