Swim Band System Starts at the Essex Recreation Complex

Posted on Tuesday April 30, 2019

A new swim band system at the Essex Recreation Complex will make for safer swimming for children of all ages.

The new program will require all swimmers under the age of 14 to be issued a wrist band upon entry to all open swims at the facility. The bands will represent the necessary supervision requirements and make it easier for lifeguards to identify those children who should be swimming within arms’ reach of an adult.

“The Town of Essex is committed to ensuring a safe and enjoyable environment for individuals and families who participate in our programs,” said Sarah Newton, Assistant Manager, Aquatics. “By issuing coloured bands to swimmers upon arrival, we are expecting greater public satisfaction as our staff will be able to more consistently apply our existing admission policy.”

Swimmers will be issued one of three coloured bands

  • Red – Children under 6 years of age. These swimmers must remain within arms’ reach of a parent or guardian who is a minimum of 14 years of age.
  • Yellow – Children aged 7-13 years of age who are not able to complete the required swim test. These swimmers must remain within arms’ reach of a parent or guardian who is a minimum of 14 years of age.
  • Green – Children aged 7-13 years of age who have passed the facility swim test. Once completed, successful green band holders will be able to scan in on future visits. All Green Band swimmers will also be able to use the water slide at no additional fee.
