For the third year in a row, the Town of Essex and its Communities in Bloom (CIB) Committee will mark Earth Day—April 22— by planting trees at the six local elementary schools in the municipality.
The Legacy Tree Program is designed to raise environmental awareness and to encourage all elementary school students to take pride in their community by enhancing and beautifying the green spaces surrounding their schools.
“The program allows the senior graduating class at each school to plant a tree in honour of Earth Day and present it as a gift to the Senior Kindergarten class,” says Doug Sweet, Director of Community Services.
“The program is intended to help create a legacy of environmental awareness over the course of a student’s academic life at the school.”
The Legacy Tree Planting event is made possible through funding from the TD Friends of the Environment Foundation, which awarded the Essex CIB Committee $2,500 towards purchasing and planting six trees.
All six trees will be planted on Earth Day.
This year’s funding also covers the purchase of a small gift for each student—a recyclable cardboard box containing a small compostable pot and a package of tomato seeds.
