The town of Essex proudly hosted the 2024 Ontario Lifeguard Championships on February 17, 2024 at the Essex Recreation Complex, marking a significant milestone as the event made its debut in the area. With dozens of competitors from across Ontario participating, the championships proved to be a thrilling showcase of lifesaving skills and teamwork.
A total of 52 competitors, organized into 17 teams, participated in this year's championships, representing a notable growth compared to previous years. These competitors, who are active lifeguards in their own communities, demonstrated their expertise in various lifesaving scenarios.
The Town of Essex Team was awarded 2nd overall in the team category and received medals in the following categories:
2 Person First Aid – Gold Medal

4 Person First Aid – Gold Medal
From left to right: Sydney Pruyn, Amelia Pruyn, Anna Papanastassiou, and Rylee Livingston.
The championships featured three distinct challenges: first aid, priority assessment, and water rescue. Competitors entered the pool area without prior knowledge of the tasks they would face. They were required to assess each situation, provide effective care, and execute timely rescues to save as many "victims" as possible within a limited timeframe.
Throughout the weekend, competitors were evaluated by a team of over a dozen judges, ensuring fair and accurate assessments of their actions.
“It was an honour for our Town to host the 2024 Ontario Lifeguard Championships and showcase the dedication and proficiency of lifeguards from across the Province.” said Sherry Bondy, Mayor. “I’d like to extend a thank you to the judges, officials, and volunteers for making this event a fantastic success!”.
