Water and sewer backups are generally caused by a blockage in the line or unusually heavy rainfall. If you are experiencing a backup, the Town of Essex may need to clear the main sanitary sewer. If the sewer is clear, the Town may advise you to hire a drainage contractor to clear your drain.

If you are concerned about an electrical hazard, shut off the electrical power if you can, and contact your hydro company - ELK Energy at 519-776-5291 or Hydro One at 1-800-434-1235.
Call your insurance company as soon as possible and report any property damage caused by the flooding. Make a list of all damaged property. Take photographs of the damaged property and the water problem. If your insurance company believes the Town of Essex is responsible for your property damage, it will make a claim for costs.
Water damage can often be minimized by acting quickly.
If water is backing up from your building drain, avoid flushing the toilet or turning on taps. Call a plumber immediately.
If the water is coming from a leaking water meter, turn off the valve in front of the meter, place a pail beneath the drip, and wrap towels around the leaking spot. Call your hydro company for emergency assistance.
