Green, red and white fireworks against a black sky

Before you plan an evening of fireworks or flying lanterns, please contact Essex Fire and Rescue to discuss the requirements.

Flying Lanterns

Flying lanterns, also known as sky lanterns, are small, paper, hot-air balloons that can lift to great heights when a heat source at the base of the lantern is ignited. Once released, there is no control over where the lanterns travel or where they land. To prevent unnecessary fires, the sale and use of flying lanterns is prohibited in the Town of Essex.

High-powered fireworks

If high-powered fireworks are going to be used, you must submit an Application to Hold a Fireworks Display to Essex Fire and Rescue at least 3 weeks prior to the event, along with the following items:

  • A list of products to be fired.
  • Proof that a Canadian certified pyrotechnician will be on site for the duration of the event.
  • A valid supervisor card and number with an expiry date in conformance with the fireworks manual of the Explosive Division, Department of Energy, Mines and Resources.
