Commissioner of Oaths

The Clerk’s Office at the Town of Essex can help you with legal documents that require signing before a Commissioner of Oaths.

Contact the Clerk’s Office between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday to arrange a mutually convenient time for signing your documents.

The person swearing the affidavit must be a resident of the Town of Essex and must appear before the Commissioner with proper identification. Two pieces of identification are required, including one piece of photo identification such as a Driver’s Licence.

There is no fee for this service.

Notary public

A Commissioner of Oaths is not the same as a notary public. A Commissioner has authority to administer oaths and take affidavits. A notary public has a much broader authority. If your document requires notarization or you need certified copies of documents, then you need to contact a lawyer or a notary.
