By-law Enforcement

The Town of Essex By-Law Enforcement Team is responsible for the investigation and enforcement of municipal by-laws. In some instances, the OPP and other provincial agencies may be required to assist with Town by-laws or other provincial regulations.

The Chief Building Officials (also called Building Inspectors) serve a dual purpose as By-law Enforcement Officers.

By-law enforcement officers have responsibilities in the following five areas:

• Providing public education
• Conducting inspections
• Responding to complaints
• Issuing warnings
• Applying penalties, when necessary
