Heritage Week

Heritage Week Web BannerEssex Rail Car Explosion, 2017

Each February, Ontarians are invited to participate in Heritage Week, an annual celebration of heritage in all its forms.

Heritage Week raises awareness of heritage resources and issues within  communities. Heritage Week also recognizes organizations, residents, and volunteers who work to protect Ontario's unique heritage resources.

In 2018, the Town of Essex will celebrate Heritage Week from February 19-23. This year's theme is "Heritage Stands the Test of Time." The Town, in collaboration with the Essex Municipal Heritage Committee (EMHC), will host a number of events.

Residents of all ages are invited to attend a free guest speaker session, join Council as they present two residents with the Community Preservation Award, or independently explore our many designated heritage places and spaces.

Guest Speaker: Bill Brundage on the Restoration of the Boblo Island Blockhouse
Wednesday, February 21, 1:00pm
Essex Train Station
87 Station Street, Essex, ON

The Bois Blanc Blockhouse was in threat of collapse when Bill Brundage visited Boblo Island in 2010. Built in 1839, the Blockhouse was constructed to keep a lookout on Canadian rebels and American sympathizers looking to invade Canada during the rebellions of 1837-1838. Thanks to the tireless efforts of Bill and a group of volunteers, much of the Blockhouse has been restored.

The Essex Municipal Heritage Committee welcomes you to explore the colourful history of the Blockhouse and learn more about the extraordinary efforts to restore the structure.

Town of Essex Staff will also be available to discuss available local financial incentive programs that can assist with historic restoration projects. Refreshments will be provided. All are welcome to attend!

Guest Speaker: Seamus Gunn on the First 30 Years of Confederation (PLUS Bonus Scanathon)
Thursday, February 22, 5:00 pm and 6:30pm
Harrow and Colchester South Community Centre
243 McAffee Street, Harrow, ON

The first 30 years of Confederation would test the new Dominion in ways never imagined.

It would begin with a political assassination, and continue with western rebellions and the expansion of the country. New provinces would join the family, a national police force and a national railway would quickly follow, leading soon after to a gold rush and our first foreign war as a nation.

The Essex Municipal Heritage Committee, in partnership with the Harrow Early Immigrant research Society (HEIRS), invites you to join storyteller Seamus Gunn at 6:30pm for his much anticipated talk on Canada from Confederation to 1899.

Before that, you can help further the preservation of local and family history with the Essex Municipal Heritage Committee's scan-a-thon from 5:00 to 6:00pm.

Members of the public are invited to bring in their historic documents, positive and negative photos and projector slides along with a USB stick.

Members of the public with a large volume of items are encouraged to schedule a time slot by contacting Town Hall at 519.776.7336 ext. 1112 or at rjabbour@essex.ca.
