Look, listen, and learn during 2018 Fire Prevention Week

Posted on Thursday September 27, 2018

Essex Fire and Rescue Services is encouraging families to practice their fire prevention, detection, and escape plans as part of Fire Prevention Week (October 7-13). This year’s theme is “Look. Listen. Learn!”

“Working in the fire service for many years, we know that people often make choices in fire situations that may jeopardize their safety,” said Essex Fire & Rescue Services Chief Rick Arnel “This year’s campaign is all about teaching people about the potentially life-saving difference escape planning and practice can make.”

This year’s theme, “Look. Listen. Learn” highlights three steps people can take to help quickly and safely escape a fire: In a fire, you may have just seconds to safely escape your home. Be prepared in advance with these simple steps for home fire escape planning:

  • Look for places fire could start.
  • Listen for the sound of the smoke alarm.
  • Learn two ways out of every room.

While this year’s campaign focuses on home fires, the message applies to most locations.
“Situational awareness is a skill people need to use wherever they go,” Arnel added. “No matter where you are, look for available exits. If the alarm system sounds, take it seriously and exit the building immediately.”

In support of Fire Prevention Week, Essex Fire and Rescue will hold its annual Open House at all three fire stations on Wednesday, October 10. This free public event runs from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. and is aimed at raising public awareness about fire prevention by inviting residents to meet local firefighters, check out their trucks and equipment, and ask questions about smoke alarms, carbon monoxide detectors, home escape plans, and any other fire-related concern.
