Notice: Credit Card Changes Coming to Town Hall

Posted on Thursday May 31, 2018

At their regular Council Meeting on May 7, Essex Town Council supported a recommendation to change credit card practices for property tax payments at Town Hall.

The change means that, effective June 30, 2018, the Town will no longer accept credit card payments over the phone for property tax payments. In-person transactions will also be limited to a maximum of $1,000.

“This change is all about reducing costs and using tax dollars efficiently,” explained Kate Bailey, Manager, Finance and Business Services. “Over the past few years credit card processing and transaction fees have increased significantly.”

Since 2010 the credit card processing fees at the Town have nearly tripled.

The change will only impact residents paying their property tax bills. Luckily, the Town has a number of alternative payment methods, including: drop boxes in Harrow and Essex centres, online/telephone payments directly through their bank, pre-authorized debit payments, as well as mail.
