Vacancy Rebate Eliminated for Commercial and Industrial Properties

Posted on Monday June 25, 2018

Changes to the vacancy rebate program mean that owners of commercial and industrial properties will no longer be provided financial relief for vacant portions of their properties.

The program was established by the province in 1998 under section 364 of the Municipal Act. The program means municipalities could provide up to 35 per cent tax rebates to owners of vacant commercial and industrial property.

In 2017, Essex County and all the lower tier municipalities in the region undertook a community engagement campaign to garner public feedback on the potential impact of ending the rebate program.

After review of the feedback received through an online survey, email responses, and open house attendance, the County Tax Collectors and Treasurers group recommended that the vacancy rebate program be eliminated for the 2018 taxation year.

At their May 30, 2017 regular meeting, Essex Town Council supported the recommendation.
