Accessibility Advisory Committee

The primary mandate of the Essex Accessibility Advisory Committee is to consult with and provide advice to Council on the annual municipal accessibility plan for the Town of Essex.

The Committee is also responsible to review and advise Council on the following 7 accessibility issues:

  • Site plans of new and existing municipal buildings where approval is required by the Town of Essex, as described in the Planning Act;
  • New and existing municipal by-laws of the Town of Essex;
  • Purchase of goods and services for the Town of Essex;
  • Significant renovation of structures designated for municipal use;
  • Leased facilities or any other facilities used as a municipal building;
  • Municipal capital facilities as defined under the Municipal Act; and
  • Goods and services provided by the Town or agents providing goods and services under contract on behalf of the Town.

Who sits on the Accessibility Advisory Committee?

The Committee is made up of 1 member of Council and up to 12 members who are appointed by Council from the community. The Mayor may also attend meetings as an ex officio. The Ontarians with Disabilities Act requires that the majority of the Committee members be persons with disabilities.

Meeting Schedule

The Accessibility Advisory Committee meets 10 to 12 times per year, or more often as deemed necessary.
