Council welcomes new Youth Council Member

Posted on Tuesday November 21, 2017

Essex– At Monday night’s regular meeting, Town of Essex Councillors welcomed the newest young citizen to their ranks. Ethan Robinson, of Harrow, officially joined Council as the Youth Council Member for Wards 3 and 4 for the 2017-2018 school year.

Ethan, 15, is currently an honours student at Kingsville District High School, as well as an active member in the community. He was the student representative with the Harrow Community Committee that went to Queen's Park to show support for a petition to keep Harrow High School open. He was also asked by the local legion to participate in the 2015 dedication of the Harrow Cenotaph. He likes science and math, and participates in many sports, particularly club volleyball and track and field.

He also comes from a long line of community-minded citizens. His great grandfather, Edwin Lloyd Robinson, was Band Master of the Kingsville/Essex Community Band. Another great grandfather, Roy Grant, was a Mayor of the Town of Harrow and Deputy Chief for the local fire department.

Ethan says that the recent passing of his grandfather, Bryan Meyer, also an active community member, spurred him to take action and get involved with Youth Council.

“I’m here to get young people’s thoughts about what’s going on and bring them to the Council table,” he says, adding that he looks forward to learning more about local government and the role of elected leaders.

The Youth Council Member positions were created in 2014 to improve youth engagement in municipal government. Youth Council Members attend, participate and/or report in regular meetings of Town Council for the purpose of bringing a youth perspective to Council matters or discussions.
