By-election called for Essex Ward 3

Posted on Wednesday July 26, 2017

Residents of Ward 3 in the Town of Essex will be going to the polls on Monday, October 23, 2017 to fill a Ward 3 vacancy.

One of the two positions in Ward 3 (formerly Colchester South) became vacant in early July following the resignation of Councillor Bill Caixeiro.

Nominations opened on Tuesday and will remain open until Thursday, September 7 at 2:00 p.m.

Interested residents may obtain a nomination package, including the prescribed nomination form, from the Clerk’s office at Town Hall (33 Talbot Street South, Essex Centre) during regular business hours (Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.).

Candidates for municipal office must be qualified electors. A person is qualified to be elected or hold office as a member of council if the following requirements are met:

  • Reside in the Town of Essex or are a non-resident owner or tenant of land in the municipality, or the spouse of a non-resident owner or tenant;
  • A Canadian citizen;
  • At least 18 years old;
  • Not legally prohibited from voting or disqualified from holding municipal office under the Municipal Elections Act or any other Act.

An Advance Poll for the Ward 3 By-election will be held on Saturday, October 14, 2017 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Harrow and Colchester South Community Centre (243 McAffee Street, Harrow).

The method of voting will be by traditional paper ballot. Electronic tabulators will be used for counting ballots.

The Voters’ List, a list of persons who are eligible to vote in the by-election, is currently being compiled. Persons on the Voters’ List will be mailed a Voter Notification Card in mid-September.

To be added to the Voters’ list after mid-September, eligible persons must attend in person at Essex Town Hall and complete an Application to Amend the Voters’ List. Personal picture identification will be required.

The Town has prepared a set of webpages devoted to the by-election. Visit the By-Election 2017 page for further information.
